Is there such a...oh dear, I've used this headline before

As I typed that headline, I heard a million SEO-consultants cry out in terror, suddenly silenced. Smart move on the consultants' side, as I've added even more Greenskins to my square-based horde, making them utterly unstoppable*. Some of these have been rebased, but I've also added a nice unit of Middlehammer Wolf Riders, some 3D-printed Wolf Riders and another Wolf Chariot to the mix horde.

 * Until the first bravery test, that is.

A lean, mean, green flanking machine!

Three of the four chariots on the left side of this picture have been rebased. One is a by now truly ancient Goblin King's Chariot (pulled by a tiny boar (by modern standards)), the other two are slightly more modern. They are dragged along by small metal wolves.

I could call this picture 'Goblin Wolf Chariots through the ages', and almost get away with it...

Number four (on the right in this picture) is GW's latest take on this vehicle. It's still quite old by today's standards. To my great joy, it's completely made out of metal (except for the wolves). I found it stuffed in a zip-lock bag, hiding at the bottom of my box of forgotten Goblins. It was impossible to resist the temptation to assemble it and slap some paint on the thing. I should add a full banner at a later date (and perhaps give in to the temptation to replace the boring Goblin face banner on the other chariot).

“Don’t fall off, don’t fall off, don’t fall off—waaagh!”

These guys were the reason I went dumpster diving in my Goblin-box to begin with. I thought I had five or six plastic Wolf Riders stuffed in there, and felt like painting them. It turned out I had enough bits (and wolf tails!) to assemble a unit of fifteen. I even found a rather menacing metal wolf for the unit's boss (and two ancient metal Wolf Riders).

“I'z ridin' diz wolf...I think.”

Giving in to the vague urge to add Wolf Riders to my horde was half the reason to go looking for these guys. The other half of it was the need to try a bit of speed painting. I re-assembled, stripped and repainted these Goblins in one (two-weekend) week. I spent most of my hobby-time in the first weekend going through the bits, figuring out how many models I had, and scraping ancient paint off of joints so I could glue the models together properly. After a Sunday night's bath in Biostrip I cleaned the models over lunch on Monday and got to airbrushing primer and some base colors on Monday evening.

“If we get dere first, we get da loot!”

I airbrushed all the wolves in shades of grey, keeping the bellies lighter than the backs. Next I went for multiple layers of drybrushing (to get a lot of contrast). When this had dried (the next evening) I used contrast paints to get a bit of color variation going. A thinned down blast of Ivory from the airbrush helped lighten up the bellies some more. All that was left then, was painting the mouths a ruddy Dwarf Flesh, followed by Reikland Fleshshade and a (subtle) Crimson Red. I kept the scheme on the Goblins simple, mostly browns for the clothing. I concentrated on their skin, eyes and teeth to give the models a bit of a punch. I also took extra effort to make the shields look good.

“Get out da way or get eaten!”

The old GW Goblins join a smaller unit of 3D-printed Avatars of War (AoW) Goblins I finished earlier. The AoW models are a lot chunkier, but have character that nicely matches their older GW counterparts. The only downside to these is that the riders are integrated into the Wolves' bodies, forcing me to paint assembled cavalry (the horror, to paraphrase Bignob Kurtz).

“Don’t need ta be big if ya got sharp stuff and faster legs!”

Assuming quite a few of you are wondering about relative scale, here's a line-up of the Wolf Riders (from left to right AoW, GW, AoW and GW). Both sizes work as far as I'm concerned, and they both look smaller than modern(ish) GW Boar Boyz. If anyone asks, I'll claim that the AoW Wolf Riders are Norman Goblins riding male wolves. I should make up an appropriately Goblin-sounding variant of Norman at some point to get away with this.

...but I should call this picture 'Goblin chariots through the ages.'

Finishing up the Wolf Rider's part of this post, here's a shot of all my chariots including Grom's three-wolf cart. I should find an excuse to field this lot soon.

  1. Great stuff and a nice mix.
Myself I prefer the older small animals, be that boars, wolves, horses etc.
Now GW seem to only be capable of making gigantic badly proportioned steroid induced rage animals. The new boars are some mad hairless mutants straight out of Resident Evil.

Whatever happened to less is more?

Love the handpainted banners and that barn is gorgeous.

PS: Tell us more about that odd looking tree... ?
